Introducing the most ‘Instagrammable’ destination for the best brunch dishes in Manchester – Federal Cafe & Bar which is located bang in the central trendy area of the Northern Quarter (a second Federal Cafe has also recently opened nearby in Deansgate).
Opened by hospitality experienced owners Claudio & Emily back in 2014, Federal appears to be the ‘place to be’ more than ever before! With produce sourced from sustainable independent local suppliers, this restaurant offers high quality ingredients for enabling a cracking coffee & a brilliant brunch for all of its customers.
The best brunch in Manchester!
Aside from hearing A LOT of hype around this Antipodean Coffee Bar & cafe from various friends around Manchester, I had a client meeting with a couple from down South who had also heard great things about this Federal Cafe up in the North; and so from discovering the propaganda had seemed to have spread around the UK, I couldn’t wait to trial out the food and see what all the fuss was about.
The Menu is just what you want – an array of mouth-watering dishes on offer and a very clear format of what you’re going to get; breakfast available before 12 noon and all day brunch until 6pm.
The brunch options were phenomenal and I’ll most definitely be returning here to make my way through pretty much all of Federal’s dishes. But as I was only with three people, you’ll have to drool over just the 4 dishes for now in my upcoming visuals of Eggs Benedict, the ‘Special’ of the day consisting of Pulled Pork & Bloody Mary, Avocado on Sourdough Toast and a White Chocolate & Almond Crumble French Toast you will never forget.
As the menu slightly overwhelmed me, I was instantly led by the Special, which was an ‘Eggs Benedict Bloody Mary’ topped with pulled pork & a drizzle of spicy tomato sauce.
Just a quick note on Federal’s interior; a very casual, Aussie styled setting with rustic wooden tables to your right and an eye-catching selection of freshly baked cakes in the cabinet to your left side upon entering the venue.
I was in the perfect setting to thoroughly enjoy my brunch upon arrival; seriously – how good does my food look below?! All washed down well with a milky latte – the coffee is incredible here as suspected.
My colleague went for the classic Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon & Avocado; again the poached free range eggs were cooked to perfection with a runny yoke middle as you slice into that first mouthful – delicious.
The Eggs Benedict dish typically comes with spinach & fresh hollandaise on sourdough toast and was accompanied with a Milk Hot Chocolate – another simple drink delivering excellence.
My guest went for the Halloumi & Shrooms (V) which was priced at £8 – affordable and in line with similar dishes on the menu. The pan fried halloumi came with garlic & thyme roasted mushrooms, free range poached eggs and spiced tomato sauce on sourdough toast with extra avocado (+£2) & chorizo (+£2).
See what I mean about the ‘instagrammable’ presentation of the dishes? Pretty much everyone in the restaurant was photographing their food – you just can’t help yourself…
Now for the most exciting dish we tried – the French Toast; coated in delicious macerated berries, white chocolate & almond crumble, whipped vanilla mascarpone & salted caramel.
This is a great dish for those who have a real sweet tooth – some people may pick this as their brunch meal (priced at £8) but I decided to have the best of both worlds; have my standard savoury main lunch dish then end on dessert.
Obviously being as delightful as it sounds, I didn’t quite have time to capture a picture of the beautiful presentation so here are my photographs a couple bites in and having smashed through the carefully built layering of French Toast.
It’s no doubt Federal sure delivers with maintaining such a high standard of food from the restaurant’s daily checks for freshness and quality within all of the ingredients.
After thoroughly enjoying the tasty menu & overall restaurant experience, I just couldn’t believe I’ve never been here before! This place has something for everyone and my only advice would be to make this an absolute restaurant essential when next in the City.
